Dari informasi website Shimano langsung membagi 2 model antara drivetrain Race dan Trail.
Produk Shimano XTR diberikan kode 9xx. Tetapi diluncurkan dengan 2 varian. Seperti code 9x5 dan  dan 9x8 ditujukan dengan peruntukan.
